Receiving blankets are the smallest and lightest weight blankets. They are great for a newborn. The weight is usually heavy flannel type. These blankets are easily washed, which is a critical feature. The wrapped newborn stays warm and the soft cotton or similar fabric is very soft so that it won’t be irritating to the newborn skin.

Crib blankets usually are larger than receiving blankets, but smaller than regular bedding. The design usually looks more like a standard blanket for an adult bed. These crib blankets are still very soft and warm. They are typically known for their washability. These blankets are often carried around as a comfort item.

Some blankets are partially fitted so that the lower portion is almost like a sack or bag. This type of infant blankets are perfect for a child who tends to kick the blankets off. A swaddling blanket is for the young infant so that the arms and chest are wrapped more closely. The lower part of a swaddle can be a bag or sack. This type of blanket also provides a sense of security because it prevents the instinctive fear of falling that infants have.

Blankets are often made of polyester. This type of blanket is soft and is bound with a wide satin binding or ribbon. The border can be one to two inches wide. The satin bound blanket is usually in a pastel color, or a color associated with gender. The binding might be coordinating or contrasting. This blanket is an alternative to a coat.

A prime requirement for blankets is that they must be easily washed. Warmth without getting too bulky is important. A cloth that isn’t stiff will cuddle the baby gently. Many different blanket colors are available, but they are often pastel blues, pinks, yellow or sea green. You may choose blankets with cuddly toys.
